Developmental Assessment
Wondering whether your child may benefit from a developmental or autism assessment?
A developmental assessment can help families better understand their child’s strengths, challenges, and overall development. Many parents seek an assessment when they notice delays or differences in communication, behaviour, learning, social interaction, or daily functioning but are unsure what type of support their child may need.
What is a developmental assessment?
A developmental assessment is a more in-depth process used to better understand how a child is developing across different areas. Depending on the provider and the concerns involved, assessments may explore communication, learning, attention, behaviour, social interaction, sensory needs, emotional functioning, or developmental differences such as autism.
Assessments are often completed by psychologists, developmental pediatricians, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, or multidisciplinary teams.
Why do families seek developmental assessments?
Families may explore an assessment when they notice concerns such as:
- Delayed speech or language development
- Behavioural challenges or emotional regulation difficulties
- Difficulty with social interaction or making connections with others
- Learning or attention concerns
- Sensory sensitivities or repetitive behaviours
- Delays in independence or daily living skills
- Concerns about autism, ADHD, or other developmental differences
- Ongoing uncertainty about what type of support their child may need
You do not need to have all the answers before asking for help.
Many parents worry about whether they are “overreacting” or whether their concerns are serious enough to seek support. A developmental assessment can help provide clarity, identify strengths and needs, and guide families toward appropriate services or recommendations.
What does the assessment process look like?
The assessment process varies depending on the provider and the concerns being explored. It may include interviews with parents, questionnaires, observations, play-based activities, and standardized testing.
Some assessments occur over multiple appointments and may result in recommendations for services such as speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, behavioural therapy, school supports, or additional medical follow-up.

One Family's Experience
“Our son was having really BIG meltdowns, had a really hard time with changes in routines, and seemed overwhelmed in busy places, but we kept getting different opinions from people around us. Some thought it was just a phase, but a teacher suggested autism or ADHD. We finally decided to do a developmental assessment, and in the end it gave us so much clarity. It helped answer a lot of questions for us, what supports might help, and how to advocate for him at school.”
